- Tracing lines too thick? After
your pen has
been used a lot it will have a tendency to trace thicker
lines. Always keep a spare nib so you can change to a
new nib and keep the old one for any occasion you may
want a thicker line. Do not press too hard on the
tracing pen. If you are making a scratching sound as you
trace ... chances are you are pressing too hard. The
absolute best way to season a mapping pen is with saliva
- When embossing always rub the surface of your
parchment paper with regular kitchen wax paper before
embossing - your tool will then glide easily.
- To emboss from the front over colored work,
always emboss over some plastic food wrap to protect the
paint - if food wrap is not handy, and it often isn't in
classes, we just cut off a bit of a plastic bag (clear)
and away we go. By embossing on the front in some areas
and the back in others you can achieve a dimensional
effect. For gentle embossing in a larger area, use the
new large embossing tool (6mm). (Mr. Big)
- Embossing the parchment gives it dimension, but
continued embossing also weakens it. If you are
having any problems, we have a couple of tips for you:
Firstly, start with a larger tip and then progress to
the finer tips - it will serve to "persuade" the paper
in a gentler fashion to do what you want. If you have
larger pattern areas of embossing that you just can't
seem to get right and it spoils the card, try stippling
from the back with the single needle tool - be sure you
have a piece of mat board or smooth cardboard in place
below. When you are finished stippling, you can also use
the white pencil on the back to fill in even white
color. The white pencil on the back is a "quick fix"
when a little more "white" is needed.
Secondly, if you need to emboss the paper to a solid
white finish you may find you will be stretching the
paper to the point it cracks. To overcome this problem,
emboss the paper until you have stretched it
sufficiently then turn over your
embossing pad and
finish embossing on the firm side. You can then achieve
the whiteness desired without further weakening the
parchment.
- The dorsing wax type crayons available in
two
color selections are best used for creating soft
background colors. They can be used as a solid color
or blended across to create a rainbow of colors. We have
found that we can increase the density of the color on
the back by working it in with a short paint brush -
ideally, cut off an inexpensive children's brush or an
old one of your own so it has a flat end. Should you
apply the dorsing on the front instead of the back after
white ink tracing your pattern - accidents can happen -
the dorso crayon color cannot be removed from the ink so
proceed and color it all. It is a really different,
pretty effect. If you use a colored liner paper inside
the card to match the dorso coloring on the front of the
card the effect is quite lovely, and very different.
- If you are not happy with the heavier effect of
the paints on your delicate cards, try the inks. You
will have a softer effect with
the inks and they can be
used for outlining with your pen as well as coloring.
The newer pearl inks with a selection of 5 colors are
wonderful, use to color only on the front of the
parchment or the pearl finish will be lost.
- For a very cost effective way to start your
coloring, combine the Perga Color markers and white
Pinta Perla paint. Apply a light marker on the parchment
area you wish to color. With a damp
brush, pick up a
little white pearl paint and swirl over the marker to
mix and then fill in the area. If it puddles or looks
watery, you have either too much water or paint on the
brush. It takes a little practice to judge how much
marker to apply to get the desired depth of color. It is
also easy to proceed to apply two or three colors of
marker on a flower petal and blend from one to the
other. You can pre-mix on a palette but you will not
achieve the same depth of color. To add more color as
you work, or to even it out, apply the maker only to the
end of your brush and add to the project.
- When perforating keep checking for new tools
- so many new tools are now available to complete
instant designs and edges. Do invest in a
fine grid -
the arrow tool is designed to be used with the grid, but
also try it with your single needle tool for a very
delicate effect. Works so well for creating your own
designs and for filling larger areas with even
perforating.
- To make 3-Dimensional flowers there is a
wonderful little item - using the petal pattern sheet
(we can send you one from Pergamano with your order -
just ask in the "Special Instructions" box at the end of
the order form) So simple, so pretty, so fast .... you
can glue them on jewelry findings or for the best gift
of all, find small frames, no glass, and set them in the
frame on a dark velvet background ... fast easy gifts.
Leaves can be added and colored on the back with your
green ink for a soft effect. We offer a
4" circle frame
for only $4.00.
- New tips: Need some new coloring options? You
can stamp directly on your parchment with Brilliance ink
pads - they need a little time to dry but they will dry
permanently. Spectacular in their wonderful soft pearl
finish. A selection is offered in Supplies in our
